About the Department

Biomedical Engineering at SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) is one of the few programs in India offering B.Tech., M.Tech., and Ph.D. degrees in the discipline, with a legacy of over 20 years of excellence in teaching, research, and innovation. Biomedical Engineering is inherently interdisciplinary, bringing together engineers, clinicians, and life scientists to design and develop medical devices, healthcare technologies, and translational solutions that improve human health and quality of life.

Established in 2004, the Department of Biomedical Engineering at SRMIST was founded with a strong and active clinical partnership with SRM Medical College Hospital and Research Centre, enabling seamless integration of engineering innovation with real-world clinical needs. Since its inception, the department has consistently engaged in diverse research activities, high-quality teaching, and industry-oriented training, evolving into one of the leading biomedical engineering departments in the country.

The department is supported by state-of-the-art research laboratories spanning key domains such as Bioimaging, Biomaterials, Biomechanics, Biosignal Processing, and Medical Image Processing, providing students and researchers with hands-on exposure to advanced tools and technologies. To further strengthen industry engagement and translational research, students are actively encouraged to collaborate with industry through the Centre for Biomedical Research and Healthcare Innovation (CBRHI), an industry-associated initiative that fosters product development, innovation, and entrepreneurship.

A recent and significant addition to the department is the Centre for Analysis of Movements, Ergonomics Research and Animersion (CAMERA) — a first-of-its-kind multidisciplinary hub dedicated to advancing the science and application of human movement analysis, ergonomics, and immersive technologies. CAMERA integrates biomechanics, wearable sensing, motion capture, and extended reality (XR) platforms to address challenges in healthcare, rehabilitation, occupational ergonomics, and human–machine interaction.

The department also emphasizes global exposure and experiential learning. Through the Semester Abroad Program (SAP), students have undertaken coursework and research projects at leading international partner institutions such as Harvard University, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Drexel University, and Lehigh University, among others.

Connecting a strong academic foundation with future aspirations, the department maintains robust industry linkages and an excellent placement ecosystem. Our recruiters include leading multinational and healthcare technology companies such as Capgemini, Siemens, Medtronic, GE Healthcare, Abbott, Johnson & Johnson, Amazon, Braun, Baxter, Stryker, BPL Medical Technologies, Boston Scientific, Meril, Biorad Medisys, LifeSigns, and Fisher & Paykel Healthcare.
